TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS
TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS fun fact- Yes, Grand Turk Island is historically believed to be the initial landing spot for Christopher Columbus when he was trying to land in the NEW WORLD and miscalculated way too far to the South.
Long before Christopher Columbus first set foot on the capital island of Grand Turk during his discovery voyage of the new world in 1492, the islands of the Turks and Caicos were inhabited by the native Taino and Lucayan peoples. These original settlers left a rich heritage of seafaring, salt raking and farming, which still lingers on today.
The islands have historically endured an ever evolving struggle for leadership from various controlling forces. The Bermudians then later followed by the Jamaicans and the Bahamians each wanted to exert control and revenue from the salt trades. The salt industry, along with small sponge and hemp exports, sustained the Turks and Caicos Islands until tourism sparked a great revenue to push this island culture to form a lasting autonomy from foreign rule.
The islands adopted their first constitution in 1976. Since then, the islands have had their own government headed by a chief minister called a Premier. The UK’s influences are prevalent on the island in various ways like it’s architecture and driving on the wrong side of the road. 🙂 Under the new Constitution of 2012, legislative power is held by a one house of legislation system. This house of Assembly consists of 19 seats, 15 elected and 4 appointed by the governor; of elected members, five are elected at large and 10 from single member districts for four-year terms.

Turks and Caicos Islands have crystal-clear blue/emerald water perfect for scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, and paddle boarding. The consistently pleasant weather (70s-80s) make it a favorite for visitors. The low key easy vibe of this island was very inviting. Definitely a very chill environment to enjoy!
The people were very warm and inviting to share their island of beauty with us!
TURKS AND CAICOS ISLAND
THE BEACHES
The island’s top beach is the pristine Governor’s Beach, which offers unbelievable sparkling waters and white sand. Considering the unrivaled quality of this beach, it’s surprisingly uncrowded. There’s a perfect beach for almost any activity.
Cockburn Towne Beach is near great restaurants and offers a historical backdrop. English Pointe is more secluded. Pillory Beach has snorkeling opportunities, and East side Beach and White Sands Beach are optimal for beachcombing. All beaches and coasts in the Turks and Caicos (up to the high tide mark) are public and free-to-access.

SNORKELING and DIVING
“In attempting to have it all, never forget that if we don’t have love, joy, peace, tranquility and an ability to be truly present in our lives that we don’t have it all anyway. We really don’t have anything.”
~Carolyn Anderson
Grand Turk is a world-renowned scuba diving destination. Sheer drop off ocean wall sites, where the depths drop from around 40 feet into the thousands, offer vibrant coral and varying marine life. Many of the best dive sites are only minutes from shore.
Snorkeling is a bit of a mixed situation. There are definitely spectacular sites to be found, but most are too far off the coast to swim out to. If the ocean conditions are calm, Boaby Rock Pointe located in shallow water, offers the nicest beach snorkeling site on the island. Lush seagrass surrounds the site, and fish, coral, and sea fans abound. CAUTION: Due to being on the east coast of the island, this beach is exposed to the constant east-southeast trade winds and can be choppy at times.
The quantity and variety of marine life thriving at the reefs of Grand Turk is astounding. There’s colorful reef fish, lobsters, eels, turtles, stingrays, eagle rays, small sharks, vibrant coral, sea fans, and sponges.
The beaches, sunshine, and ocean provide the backdrop for many other adventures! Do you have a personal BUCKET LIST for travel dreams? You too can DAYDREAM YOUR NEXT TRAVEL ADVENTURE! We did on our last visit in Turks and Caicos Islands! We enjoyed exploration and adventure here!

TURKS AND CAICOS ISLAND
– HOW DO I GET TO THE BEST BEACH THERE?
We boarded an open air bus that transported us to the beach. We spent the day lazing on chase lounges and soaking up the rays! Lunch and an open bar were included here at the Beachside Bungalow! It was a welcome experience.
Be sure to pack the correct supplies for the day!
We packed our own SNORKEL GEAR and WATERPROOF VALUABLES POUCH/WALLET and UNDERWATER WATERPROOF CAMERA, towel, book, and sunscreen so we were well prepared!
WHAT WILL I EXPERIENCE ON
TURKS AND CAICOS ISLAND?
Snorkeling opportunities are available here! The ocean floor in this area does appear vastly different from other SNORKELING SPOTS we’ve experienced.
People were swimming and eating and having a great time! It was very relaxing! I could spend countless hours here on this beach and be totally happy! Horse back riding into the ocean was also being offered at this resort too! Many enjoyed this option!
TURKS AND CAICOS ISLAND
WHAT IS THE CLIMATE?
It’s beautiful almost every day with year around lows averaging 73 degrees Fahrenheit in March and highs averaging 89 degrees Fahrenheit in July. However, to maximize your chances of warm, sunny conditions, the best time to visit is between April and June. This is when temperatures peak between 84 and 87 degrees Fahrenheit, and rain stays to a minimum. It was beautiful. We visited in January. It was such an enjoyable relief from the frigid Northern cold we experience in Michigan.
On average, Grand Turk receives 21 inches of rain per year, but rainfall patterns vary by region. One of the driest islands in the region. The rainy season in Turks and Caicos typically runs from late August to early December, with November being the rainiest month. Hmmm…pretty tough to take!
