It’s time for SPRING BREAK!
Well, it’s that time of year again as we prepare ourselves to head out on another road trip across America to chase sunshine and warmth. It’s time for SPRING BREAK! We will be searching for a tan and ocean breezes to caress our pale, pasty white Northern Michigan skin that has been starved of sunlight for far too long!

BUCKLE UP! Let’s go exploring! Sunshine here we come!
We excitedly plan, make reservations, pack, and generally build excitement for that change to the routine that forges deeper bonds among our little family annually. Where to go? What exciting events to schedule? What is the storm forecast for driving? Will the weather be warm enough in the southern states? These are the questions we obsess over.
Then…there is the packing! Consult THE TOP 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO PACK! I ALWAYS over pack. I try very hard to be cognizant that each year when we return home, I unpack a lot that I did not need to take. I lay everything out and then start to remove items that I can determine are not necessary. Somehow many items return into the luggage to be included in the packing process. Then there are the shoes…many different shoes are necessary for many different purposes. My husband shakes his head at my logic, but ladies, we know what I’m talking about, right? Do you have a favorite pair of shoes – or 4 – that you MUST take with you on vacation? I do!

Each of us properly prepares our work/college priorities to be able to carve out the necessary time from our busy schedules, and we load up the vehicle to depart on our newest adventure. We try to include all in our plans so coordinating dates can be challenging. We are pretty blessed that once again our calendars seem to be lining up to enjoy a spring vacation together! Now that our oldest has graduated from college and landed his dream job and our youngest has a scheduled week off from college…LET’S GO!
NOTHING is better than a week with our boys! Even better is that the March Madness Tournament provides us endless entertainment!
The necessity of that mental break and dose of pure vitamin D from the sunshine along with family bonding time is so enjoyed! We refuse to concede. Travel is a must!
It’s time for SPRING BREAK! Lets go!
I LOVE A ROAD TRIP! “Hey! That looks kinda neat! Let’s take that exit to explore!” Invariably, someone groans…until I say the magic words…”I’m kinda hungry, how about we go explore and look for a good place to get a snack!” Somehow, everyone is now engaged in my plan of action! I love it! We have stopped off on our way to some travel destination many times to take in covered bridges, national parks, birthplaces of famous people, and many other interesting things from a road sign, notation on a map, or brochures from gas stations that we picked up along the way. Try throwing a curveball to your family! It’s fun! Be goofy! EXPLORE!!! The road less traveled reveals great bounty!
I always consult Guy Fieri’s, recommendations for Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives indexed by state too! We have enjoyed his recommendations and have yet to have a bad experience. Use the app. It’s easy.

Love the gas station stops too. It’s fun to observe a slice of life in the many states you visit. The “local-color” observed from accents in the south, to the beverages that are not like our normal, to the food choices that change region to region. People watching is interesting.
So, where to go… For our family we prefer sunshine, ocean, and warmth. It must be somewhere that the temperatures rise above 75-80 degrees. Long beach walks and oceanside accommodations are preferred. East coast to MYRTLE BEACH? South to FLORIDA? Southwest to TEXAS? West coast to CALIFORNIA? Make a plan! Do it!
Where are you considering for your get away? Any recommendations? Leave me information in the comments below!
So, wherever your spring break takes you…remember to plan, pack wisely, challenge yourself to take a few detours, enjoy a sunrise and a sunset (click this link), but most importantly HAVE FUN and build memories along the way!
Leave a comment below to tell me about your SPRING BREAK plans! Where are you traveling? What are you planning for your family this year? If you are not traveling, do you have any family fun plans in mind? Tell me all about it!

Building memories is sooo important. It’s great that you guys make the time for this. They grow up fast.

Thank you! YES! YES they do! We are transitioning to more of an empty nest currently. Ironically, COVID-19 provided opportunities to spend great quality time together!
Tricia Snow
I can’t wait to get out there soon as well!
Jaclyn
Unfortunately, “Spring Break” got canceled for a lot of people this year. Hopefully people will be able to use these ideas when we can travel again.

Great list of Top 10 Things To Pack. Let’shear it for polyester sundresses!
Barbara Robinson
RIGHT! YES! I love no worries with the ironing!!! 🙂
Lori
Can’t wait for vacation time.
Eva Keller
We had a recent road trip where we took detours from signs we saw along the way and it was a really neat way to travel. We like leaving open time to do things like that because it’s impossible to really plan out everything that interests you before going.
Barbara Robinson
Oh yes! we stopped (on a different road trip) at the the birth place of John Wayne, Wild Bill Hitchcocks ranch, where little house on the prairie was filmed, etc. IT WAS SO CORNY and FUN! Actually really interesting!
Julia Kelahan
I agree – the unplanned detours are the best!
Kendra
I love a good road trip adventure! We love to seek out the Diners, Drive Ins, and Dives too!
Barbara Robinson
Isn’t it fun to try the restaurants in the books or from episodes! 🙂

I love a good road trip too!

I know, right! SO much fun!

Great post! I can’t wait to travel again.

I love taking road trips and can’t wait until we can get back out on the road! Hoping it’s not too much longer. I always tend to overpack too. It doesn’t bother me when overpacking for a road trip though because we have the room for it. I’ve been trying to cut down on what I pack for trips that involve flights though because it’s not as easy to take extra stuff. I still haven’t perfected packing for our family of 6, and as the kids grow up I’m sure it will always be an evolving process.
Barbara Robinson
YES! Two years ago, I did a really good job of stepping back and NOT micro-managing packing for my oldest son’s senior trip. He was seventeen at the time. The night before we boarded the cruise ship we were at my Aunt’s house in Houston, TX visiting with them before heading down to Galveston the next morning. I had instructed my son to pack a carry on for traveling (short stay in Houston first as we were driving NOT flying) AND his cruise luggage separately. Guess what my son discovered that night? YEP! He’d forgotten his cruise ship luggage in his bedroom back in Michigan. TRUE STORY! Thank goodness for late night department stores! 🙂 So, YES! it is an evolving process! 🙂 🙂
Sydney
I love DDD, will have to look up his app!
Barbara Robinson
SO FUN!

I love a good road trip! I also really like what you said about challenging yourself to take a detour along the way. It sometimes makes for the best memories.
Barbara Robinson
The unplanned impulsive detours make the best memories it seems!
Sandi
We have had 4 trips cancelled in the past two months. Glad you could get out and enjoy the break. Here in Boston we are locked up tight.
Barbara Robinson
I’m sorry to hear that your trips were cancelled. I do understand that this is a difficult time for everyone! Boston STRONG!
Shirley
I love road trips! Most of the time ours are very short and quick but any trip is a good trip. Thanks for sharing.
Lina
I can’t wait to go on our next road trip!
Cindy
We love road trips too! I love preparing for them..my list making self loves that part.
Lisa
I can’t wait to take a vacation!!

Oh my goodness, I ALWAYS over pack as well. Thank goodness for my husband who was an Eagle Scout and is an expert packer 😉
Charlene
My girlfriend plans all of her trips around Diners, Drive Ins and Dives! I’ve tried a few and they are very good!
Ruth Iaela-Pukahi
My kids and I want to go on a road trip within the next two years. It’s going to take lots of planning especially since we have to fly from Hawaii. We will need lots of advice from experienced road trip families like yours.
Stephanie
wait! There is an app for diners, drive ins and dives?! Thats awesome I’m definitely going to utilize that whenever we travel!
Megan
I try so hard not to overpack. Ever since the airlines started charging for bringing a bag, it’s made it much easier to really stick to teh necessities!
Barbara Robinson
Yes! I agree!
Linda Egeler
My Megnya walking sandals are my go-sandals that I take on every trip. But I do like the look of those Clark’s wedge sandals when you want to get a bit dressed up. I’ll have to see if they have my size!
Barbara Robinson
They are so perfect, supportive, and comfy!
Alexis Farmer
I use Guy Fieri for food recommendations too! Haha
Barbara Robinson
He’s our favorite!
Tiffany
Our “spring break’ trip will be camping in April. Can’t wait to get out again!!
Barbara Robinson
Really enjoy your time!
Jason Gowin
we’ve talked about going to my old stomping grounds in West Palm Beach…but we are still very cautious of my wife’s heart condition with covid. I look forward to when we can finally get our family traveling again.
Chelsea
I’m hoping we get to camp over Spring Break but road trips are my favorite way to travel!
Kendra
Unfortunately, we won’t be traveling for Spring Break this year as our youngest is having his wisdom teeth extracted mid-week. We do love to find Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives places too while we travel. Maybe I’ll make a point to find some DDD eats here locally during Spring Break week just for fun! It’s my birthday week that week anyway. 🙂
Larissa Li
We are in Florida right now. Had a helicopter ride just yesterday. Pool and ice cream today. Safaris tomorrow… Disney next week. Full schedule! Come over!
Sabrina DeWalt
We must be kindred spirits. We always look for DDD places to eat when we travel! We have been on an endless road trip since October. I am a consummate planner but have learned to go with the flow these days, which has led us to visit some spectacular places. When we got married in April, it was a pandemic wedding with no guests and no honeymoon. I thought it would be nice to go to Hawaii this year as a combined first anniversary, honeymoon, and annual vacation (we usually take a week for our vacation in March). Covid has ruled that plan out, and with our constant travel the last few months, I didn’t think we were going to take a regular vacation. We decided to visit the Keys for a mini-vacation instead. As it happens, we were able to book something for the weekend of our first anniversary.
Suzan
We’ve been talking road trip to get away and to celebrate our 25th this spring. Beach is always out destination of choice.
Kristen
Love the shoes! They are super cute!
Kristin
Aw man, this is really making me wish we had planned a Spring Break getaway! We will likely do a long weekend roadtrip at least. Great ideas!
Marianne
I think we are going to be stuck at home for Spring Break (our kids just had theirs shifted to April by the school board). I’m looking forward to summer break instead.
Maria Gustafsson
As a Canadian, it kills me that we don’t have any of those road trip choices. The border isn’t open after all. What I wouldn’t do for a couple weeks on a beach somewhere…sigh.
Carolyn
You’re right, it really is a challenge trying to coordinate schedules with kids in high school and college. Throw in my husband’s work schedule and picking dates is the hardest part of any trip!
Danielle Ardizzone
Unfortunately, we’re not going anywhere for spring break. Can’t wait until we can, though!
Melissa Jones
I know I’m definitely ready for spring break! It won’t be our original plans, but it will still be good to get away!
Sandra Barrett
We are headed to Palm Beach for Spring break in April – looking forward to some fun in the sun.
Sabrina
I have to admit I pack exactly like you do. Lol. We have no plans to travel this year. Hopefully next spring.
Suzan
Spring is in the air!
Barbara Robinson
Melt snow…MELT!

Road trips are so much fun!
Barbara Robinson
It is so much fun to be a part of new discovery in places you don’t normally get to see!
