COZUMEL, MEXICO SNORKELING ADVENTURE!
Snorkeling is so relaxing, calming, and tranquil. In a COZUMEL, MEXICO SNORKELING ADVENTURE the sounds of the earth underwater are so very different than the sounds of the earth carried by air movement. Salt water is healing. Your buoyancy is present. Exploration is inevitable. The sunshine and ocean provide the backdrop for our adventures!

In attempting to have it all, never forget that if we don’t have love, joy, peace, tranquility and an ability to be truly present in our lives that we don’t have it all anyway. We really don’t have anything.

We rushed to the car rental counter to rent a JEEP in San Miguel de Cozumel! The best way to get around in Cozumel, Mexico is in a vehicle that you can hop in wet from snorkeling in the ocean and be dry from the sunshine and tranquil breeze by the time you stop at the next location! It is so hot, dry, and sunny that a JEEP is the smartest way to go on any adventure! If you remember to pack the TOP 10 THINGS YOU NEED TO PACK, you will be ready to dive into the ocean for this adventure right along with us!
We headed out of town towards the reef break snorkeling areas right away! The main road that loops the island along the coast is Ave. Rafael Melgar. Many hotels line this coastal stretch. They do not mind if you use their beachfront, facilities, parking, etc. to snorkel as long as you open a tab and have some refreshments as part of your stop there. We packed our own SNORKEL GEAR and WATERPROOF VALUABLES POUCH/WALLET and UNDERWATER WATERPROOF CAMERA so we were well prepared!
A detailed map of dive locations and reef information can be found HERE.
A favorite spot to snorkel is DZUL-HA. This is one of the best beaches for snorkeling in Cozumel. It is ideal because the snorkeling area is closer to the shore. Access by boat is not necessary.
Make sure you bring foot protection to avoid stepping on urchins and bring your wet suit to avoid contact with jellyfish or rough corals. It is not over crowded here. It provides an enjoyable opportunity here for you to explore without feeling like too many people are surrounding you. The shores are slightly sandy. Once you hit the water, the sea is covered with sea urchins and coral rocks. It has an ocean depth of about 10-15 feet. It is a perfect spot to easily enjoy a Mexican snorkeling experience.
The clear water makes it easier to see the underwater and its beautiful surroundings consisting of beautiful marine life such as damselfish, wrasse, parrotfish, and butterflyfish. We enjoyed this stop along with others as we made our trek around the island.
We continued around the Coastal Road enjoying the drive and scoping out other snorkel locations.

Many reef areas provide protection for calmer waters. The ocean floor in this area does appear vastly different from other SNORKELING SPOTS we’ve experienced. We noticed coral farming on the ocean floor. As coral is developing it needs to be protected. Notice the grids on the ocean floor.
We also noticed safe havens for small fish were set up in pots to provide a habitat since the coral was in short supply in this area.
As we ventured on we located outdoor shopping markets, local hang-out watering holes on the ocean and places to eat a wonderful Mexican fare lunch with mariachi singers! Kite surfers were present. People were swimming and eating and having a great time! It was very relaxing!
The boys REALLY enjoyed the jeep driving in Cozumel, Mexico too!
We continued around the Coastal Loop to the Cross Island Road. The other side of Cozumel, Mexico is without reef breaks and is a wildly rugged roaring wave action perfect for kite surfing and other big wave activities!
We stopped off at San Gervasio Mayan Ruins on our way back into San Miguel de Cozumel. San Gervasio is the largest Mayan Ruins site on Cozumel, and also the most significant. It was a holy site, dedicated to Ixchel, the goddess of fertility. Mayan women would pilgrimage here from all over the country to pray and offer sacrifices at the temples of San Gervasio. The settlement dates back as far as 100 B.C., and was continually occupied beginning in 200 A.D. It is a fascinatingly eerie walk-about. The civilization was predominantly wiped out by smallpox VIRUS in 1520 brought to their culture by Spanish looking for gold.
We highly recommend a snorkeling vacation/exploration of Cozumel, Mexico! It is very family friendly and there are great reef locations right off shore to explore without needing a boat! Dzul-Ha Beach right as you leave town is the easiest to get to and provides a wonderful experience for snorkelers!
Another recommended snorkeling spot is PALANCAR REEF (located Southwest of San Miguel de Cozumel along Rafael E. Malgar Avenue) or EL CIELO (located in the southern part of the island).
EXPLORE! ENJOY!

Sounds like a great place to take a vacation.
Chelsea Hudgens
Wow! This place looks so much fun. I haven’t ever really traveled to many places, and I have always wanted to try snorkling, but always been afraid I would swallow water or something because I have never used snorkel gear before. The place you went looks so calming and peaceful, I have GOT to put that on my list lol. Your pictures are really good too. Thanks for sharing your experience.
Barbara Robinson
I encourage you! You’d love it and it is soothing and wonderfully relaxing! Hawaii was where I learned…it was WAY bigger water there and windy waves…Mexico, Grand Cayman, virgin islands, Antigua, Bahamas are much calmer experiences for me!
Emma
This looks like so much fun! One of the stops on the cruise I went on was Cozumel. I’d love to go back and spend more time there.
Leeanne
What a great place to snorkel. My kids are just learning to breathe with the mask on so we will put this on our list of places to go the next time we are in Mexico.
Nancy Mueller
Looks lovely! I’ve only been snorkeling twice: once in Hawaii and once in the Galapagos with sea lions. Both times were fabulous experiences. Your post reminds me why I enjoyed each experience so much. Thanks for sharing!

We loved snorkeling in Cozumel! Such beautiful water and so many tropical fish! Your pictures are beautiful – thank you for sharing!
Judean
I have been to Cozumel many times as a cruise port and ventured out a bit. While I love sea life and beaches, I never got into snorkeling. There is something that scares me about it…however, your pictures are so beautiful..I may need to rethink this.
Misskorang
Your pictures speak a thousand words! Is snorkeling something you learn before such a trip or how does it work?
Barbara Robinson
You can pick up snorkel gear relatively inexpensively. Practice using a mask and snorkel and breathing underwater using the snorkel (face in, tip of snorkel out)…in a pool, lake, or anywhere prior to your trip. I grew up snorkeling inland fresh water lakes as a kid with a mask only. It is great fun to see with clarity the underwater world!
Annette
Such a wonderful vacation!! Thank you for bringing us along while we wait for opportunities to get back to “normal”. Thanks for sharing!
Cindy Mailhot
We did the Rio Secreto during our time in Cozumel (by taking the ferry to Playa del Carmen). This snorkeling experience looks awesome. I love snorkeling.

Tiffany
Oh on a cold Chicago day like today, this is where I would rather be!

Love Cozumel! Nothing like 100 feet visibility when diving. Never mind just having to hang and watch the reef wall go by as you drift.
Keirsten
Looks like so much fun. I used to snorkel when I was a kid visiting my dad in Florida. Always had such a great time doing that. I even saw Barraccudas haha
Kristin
Looks amazing! This is just the warm inspiration I need as we are heading into negative temps this weekend! I’d rather be snorkeling!

Last time I went snorkling, I was 7 months pregnant and all I could do was float around. It was hysterical.
