Kauai, Hawaii is paradise! No other words can describe the splendor of this tropical destination! Our passion is snorkeling and soaking up rays here! We try to make the visit every five years! The ocean seems to call our name and the sunrises whisper to our dreams to re-visit often!
The ocean here is a magical place that we want to share with you! Come snorkel Kauai, Hawaii!
When you are planning your next travel adventure or putting together your (click link to start dreaming) TRAVEL BUCKET LIST, try out snorkeling if you have never tried before. Wear a rash guard for extra warmth if you are going to be in the ocean for an extended amount of time as your core body temperature can be affected. You don’t want the chills later on and it has UV protection!
Snorkeling is a very calming, relaxing experience. The wonders of underwater exploration reveal many amazing discoveries. Creatures you’ve never thought to see in their own natural habitats reveal themselves to you! Be sure to see them! Don’t fog up, be sure to remember your anti-fog spray for your snorkel mask! This is what we use! Keep it right in your snorkel bag, so you have it when you need it!
Some are harmless bright colored tropical fish that you’ve seen mini versions of in salt water fish tanks. Some are harmful that you need to be aware of how to coexist with. Some will startle you and may be shocking! I’ve experienced all three scenarios and remain an avid lover of snorkeling! But overall the vast majority of experiences fall into the first category and can be quite a serene, pleasant experience.
God’s hand in the vast creation of so many varieties of brightly colored fish reveal themselves to you in this underwater world filled with riots of bold, beautiful color!
A favorite spot to snorkel is located in Po’ipu in the Southern part of Kauai at Po’ipu Beach Park! Another to really enjoy the turtles is in the North shore area at Anini Beach. Either are enjoyable. Just check the weather, if it is raining in one place go to the other. Usually, one or the other has sunshine each day!
We tend to travel in January-March so these are go-to picks when other beaches have BIG WAVES. There are numerous places to rent gear on the island too, if you should choose not to pack your own! We’ve grown spoiled to enjoy our own gear when we travel though!
It never fails when we are at Po’ipu Beach, a monk seal will come to shore to lay on the beach in the sun. Usually, one or two can be found there. We have also witnessed them near Gillin’s Beach, a more secluded area, but also in the South shore area.
Many turtles can be found on the ocean floor here in Kauai just off shore inside protected reefs. It is so much fun to snorkel and swim with the turtles. Give them plenty of space though! All of creation deserves the respect of their own sanctuary.
Many brightly colored fish and coral can also be found on the inside of the reef. The depth of the ocean on the outside of the reef is daunting and we did not cross that barrier.
Snorkeling in KAUAI is fascinating! The ocean bottom is very volcanic rock covered in algae. The beaches are all fine powdery sand and crushed shell though. We have snorkeled here on four separate occasions and enjoyed the same areas each time. Each visit is like renewing a friendship with an old bestie, the same yet different as each have evolved and grown in a new way! I like to float near the surface on a board, my boys like to dive deep and chase marine life zig zagging on the ocean floor. My husband likes to take the videos and photos with his underwater NIKON camera. We all enjoy soaking up the sunshine in between! What a complete blessing to have this opportunity!
Our boys have grown up near the water and really enjoy all water sports. They have a great appreciation for conservation of all species and the biological cycles that surrounds this phenomenon. A greater appreciation for creation and God’s presence in all constantly amazes us!
The world underneath the ocean surface reveals the experience of traveling to different destinations above the surface. Each travel destination’s habitat is vastly different. The same can be said for the beaches and underwater experience in different parts of Kauai. The marine life underwater is vastly different as well. Notice the differences in the photos. Predators like to hide in the rock crevices in deeper water.
Daily while traveling and exploring each new adventure snorkeling, God’s amazing presence reveals itself to us in unexpected ways. A moment of tranquility watching a beautiful fish zigzag along the ocean floor, or observing a monk seal hopping and bobbing to shore to lie in the sun to molt, or sitting quietly on a sandy beach with your eyes closed just listening to the surrounding sounds filling your senses with many new wonders all at the same time.
How about capturing a sunrise early morning with the promise of a new day laid out before you?
However you find God’s inspiration each day, allow it to serve as a reminder that He is in control. Trust in Him, fear not, and replace any doubts you have in Him with prayer, asking Him to teach you to trust more and more each day. The God that created the heavens and the earth and the oceans and the sun will watch over, protect, and guide you each day if you only ask for Him to be a part of your life. Grow in your faith and trust in Him. He awaits you. He is willing to walk beside you through all of your life adventures…even snorkeling!

I have only been snorkeling once. While it was beautiful, I personally did not find it to be all that relaxing. I am not a fan of my face being covered, especially by water. I do think I would have to give it another shot if I went to Hawaii though.

I know what you are referring to…I find that when I put my face halfway in so my breathing is underwater, then ease the rest of the way in it helps to transition.

I haven’t been snorkeling yet, aside from in the pool as a kid :). Hawaii looks like the perfect place to try it out. Actually, I’ve been looking into more as I’ve been researching a bit on Dry Tortugas and a Key West trip. Still years out for me, but I’m learning. Hawaii is probably a few years out for me, too.
